Of Giraffes, Horses, and Spanish speaking countries Permalink |
Year 2 of vet school is just about history. All of our finals are over - the only thing remaining is this week’s “Integrative Medicine” elective where we explore classic oriental medicine therapies like acupuncture and herb therapy and learn to diminish our stress through yoga and QiGong. A rather relaxing end to a rather demanding semester.
As the seemingly endless tests and studying were coming to an end, a unique opportunity presented itself in the Large Animal Hospital. As a freshman, I took a Neonatal Care elective which included a stint on “neonate team” the spring semester where we were called in to help take care of any foals that needed care at the hospital. This year they did not have quite enough neonate team volunteers from the first year class, so a few of us second year students volunteered to be on teams. Unlike last year, I did not happen to be scheduled any of the times when a foal came into the hospital this year. A couple of weeks ago, however, a rather unique patient did come into the hospital when I was scheduled for neonate team. A giraffe at the local zoo suprised everyone when she gave birth to a calf on May 5, two months earlier than expected. The calf was not suckling and was in overall poor health so they decided to bring it to the Large Animal Hospital at the university for around-the-clock care. I would be spending the night with a 2-day-old giraffe!
It’s safe to say that despite the wealth of brain power at the university, there aren’t many people, no matter how educated, that are up to speed on how to care for a baby giraffe. So the medical management basically followed what would be given to a foal or a bovine calf. For those of us there from the neonate team, our instructions were simple - help the giraffe get up when he wants to, and help him lie down when he wanted to lie down - with his big gangly legs and a relatively slippery floor, two things that weren’t very easy for him.
The unnamed giraffe had improved considerably from when he first came in, but was far from out of the woods. He was receiving nutrition and fluids intravenously and they were trying to teach him to drink out of a bucket since they couldn’t be sure his mother would accept him if he recovered and went back to the the zoo. He also hadn’t slept for any appreciable amount of time since being born, and during the four hours I was there he didn’t improve much in that respect - at most, we got him to sleep a couple of minutes at a time.
It was an incredible experience to be near such an exotic animal. Two days later I had neonate duty again and the unnamed giraffe was well on his way to recovery. One of the sure signs of recovery was an increasingly rambunctious attitude. He became adept at drinking milk and water from a bucket and then spitting it on the person giving it to him. And he also liked to nibble on collars and stethoscopes.
We were under strict orders not to take any pictures of the patient. A few days later, however, when it became clear that the giraffe would be making it back to the zoo, they decided to make a media event of it. For a glimpse of the cute guy, check out the following:

At the end of this week, summer is upon us. The last “free” summer I’ll have as a vet student since we spend next summer in rotations. To bide my “free” time, I am going to be working at a local racetrack as a “detention barn technician.” After a race is run, the top two finishers have to go to the detention barn to get a blood and urine sample to test for illegal drugs. Only a licensed vet can take the blood sample, so that means my job is to go into a stall with a high-strung thoroughbred racehorse and waiting until he or she decides to pee. Nine years of post high school education so that I can catch pee! A learning experience, I am told.
The highlight of the summer, however, is destined to be my trip to Costa Rica and Nicaragua in June. I am joining a number of fellow vet students on a trip in which we will perform spays and neuters on the local pet population, as well as perhaps some other fun vet stuff on large animals and/or wildlife. And of course we will be doing all of this while attempting to speak and understand Spanish. It just doesn’t get any better than this!
