After weeks of working in a lab, basically doing the same thing day in and day out (interrupted by a week in Iowa, of course), the time has finally come to head north, to Red Lake Indian Reservation, where I am spending a week as part of a RAVS (Rural Area Veterinary Service) team. We will be running a clinic for the local people where we will be giving checkups, shots, doing spays and neuters, and just about anything else that needs to be done to help out with their animals.

On the Front Lines in Iowa Permalink | 780 Comments

Last fall, they had a meeting at the vet school to tell people about the Medical Emergency Corp. The Corp was made up of volunteers from the various medical schools at the University of Minnesota - the veterinary school, medical school, dental school, etc. The purpose of the Corp was to develop a network of volunteers that could be called upon to respond to disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, as well as man-made disasters. I wasn’t able to make it to that meeting despite my interest, so I figured I’d just let it slide until next school year when they would hopefully have another meeting. It turns out I didn’t have to wait that long - they had another meeting in the spring and I signed on.
