We are approaching the end of March and we still haven’t had any foals come into the Large Animal Hospital. I was on call the night of St. Patrick’s Day, so no green beer for me - but as it turned out I could have celebrated without worry. Although I did end up spending the time constructively by studying for the two tests we had this Wednesday, so I guess it was all for the best.

Occasionally, when we aren’t studying, attending classes, or cutting up/poking/prodding poor defenseless animals, we vet students do something fun. And when you are in Minnesota in the winter, fun, apparently, is a thing called “broom ball”.

I’m afraid I don’t have any information on the history of broom ball and how it has become an integral part of the Minnesota winter experience, but thanks to the intramural broom ball program, I am now an experienced broom ball player. So what is broom ball? In short, it’s pretty much hockey without skates, without a lot of rules, and with “brooms” and a ball instead of hockey sticks and a puck.
